12 Most Important Elements of How to Lead From Within

12 Most Important Elements of How to Lead From Within

During tonight’s #leadfromwithin Tweetchat I got asked an interesting question by DM: “Don’t all natural born leaders lead with their heart? Good stuff!” I glibly replied “yes they do, issue is Corporate Leadership & Natural Leadership is not the same!” Then I took a DEEP BREATH and decided to write a more considered response: 12 Most Important Elements of How To Lead From Within for Leaders.

1. What is Lead From Within?

Tonight, June 21st, Lolly Daskal facilitated a detailed conversation about lead from within during her Tweetchat #leadfromwithin.   Only a fool would try to summarize that chat, so here goes:

  • RT @LollyDaskal: To Lead From Within (LFW) is to take possession of the thoughts, beliefs, and actions of your heart and mind. #leadfromwithin
  • RT @LollyDaskal:  When you choose to lead from within, you make decisions that reflect your core alignments of disciplines to actions #leadfromwithin
  • RT @LollyDaskal: Your core beliefs dictate the life you live, the life you live defines and reveals your inner disciplines and leadership #leadfromwithin
  • RT: @LollyDaskal: When we examine our core beliefs we learn to grow from the inside out #leadfromwithin
  • RT scedmonds: A10: being consistent with our vision, purpose, & values enables others to TRUST we’ll do what we say we will do. #leadfromwithin
  • RT @prsingleton: I would argue that its your core values that shape your mission from which your actions are shaped #leadfromwithin

Okay, so in summary, leading from within means leading out of inner congruence.  It is heart centered, starting with our unique values and then working out through our examined beliefs.  We then take actions that are consistent with our values and beliefs.   We stand for something and people can Trust that.

2. How to Lead From Within?  First step is values.

Do true leaders always lead from the heart?  Help define this quality.  We all know the difference between positional authority and “true” leadership.  In our dialog of tonight we seemed to land on the inner most core as being our values.  Start here.  Use your values as the lens by which all else comes into alignment.   To find your values?  Look & feel deeply.  A gauge that you have arrived might be found here: RT @lollydaskal: Inner peace is an indicator of alignment of beliefs and core actions in your life #leadfromwithin and this Tweet from Kenny:@Grit08 @Josepf @VRSS Core Values Are Non Negotiable but Open to Correction by New Insight and Learning. #leadfromwithin”

3. Follow your path & intuition.

I got stuck in Twitter jail, you go there for 100 Tweets in one hour or over 1,000 in one day.  My friend Kenny, @Grit08 came to pay a visit.  I asked him for his three most important lessons and you are reading number 1.  Follow your path and intuition. Love Kenny.  This is so simple and complex it is brilliant.  If you are in touch with your intuition and listen to it, respect it, then you are also in touch with your values.  This gives you the foundation and courage to follow your path.  Leaders simply are the ones who strike off on the path less taken.  Other’s follow because they can sense, feel, the “mission” the passion.

4. Respect People Always.

Kenny #2 and if you knew Kenny you would know this defines him.   Kenny says: “Respect People always; you respect yourself through others.” Perfect? Right?

5. Remember you will be wrong more than right.

The last of the three by Kenny can also be found in this ReTweet by Chris Edmonds RT scedmonds: FOGGY! RT @GRIT08: All our truths are misted windows that need cleaning constantly. #leadfromwithin You are following your path and intuition; you are respecting people; and you are open to learning from people and situations.  These are all great traits of a leader.  Thank you Kenny!

6. How to Lead From Within?  Second step is Beliefs.

How can people tell what you believe?   They can look at your checkbook.  Where we spend our time and money, our actions, speak to our true beliefs.  Nothing that we say can and should be able to overcome what we do.  RT @Cybuhr A8: Success is an obstacle to our authenticity when the victory is inconsistent with our beliefs. #LeadFromWithin

Acting from beliefs is called finding your power.  Being able to go even further and challenge your own beliefs is called personal leadership.  RT @SmArtfulCoach: RT @lollydaskal: When we examine our core beliefs we learn to grow from the inside out #leadfromwithin

7. How to Lead From Within?  Third step is Values #2.

RT @geoffreywebb: Your core values dictate your true mission and illuminate your real “vision” regardless of what you think or say. #leadfromwithin Yes, Values is a repeat.  Our personal values and ethics become the seed of our Corporate Values.  As complex as Corporations are they can be less complex than we as humans.  Their value set should be simpler and more tightly defined. Remember, when there is a doubt in how to do something within the business?  Values, in rank order, will always decide.  Choose them wisely.

8. How to Lead From Within?  Fourth step is Purpose.

RT @gldunnjr: Beliefs  + Vision + Mission = steps we take 2 #leadfromwithin Very well said.  I would add one step we did not discuss explicitly, purpose.  Purpose is the combination of your unique competencies blended with your values.  Purpose is extremely powerful.  The deeper a leader listens, the more likely they are to tune into their purpose.  Purpose leads into Vision and Mission for an organization.  If you do not know your purpose, your reason for being, you will have a very difficult time generating a compelling Vision/Mission.

9. How to Lead From Within?  Fifth step is Vision.

RT @elincomm: Having vision is  having hope. #leadfromwithin Wow, Tina, so true.  Proverbs “without vision the people perish”.  Great leaders know how to paint a picture of hope and expectation!  They energize us with a future perfect tensed description.  As Lolly describes: RT @LollyDaskal: Vision is a picture of what we want to accomplish in carrying out our purpose based on our core beliefs #leadfromwithin Great visions always capture us emotionally.  They engage our sense of purpose.  RT @darrellcbrown: Mission answers what; Vision answers how(future); core beliefs answers why!!!   #leadfromwithin

10. How to Lead From Within?  Sixth step is Mission.

RT @Josepf: loving this one: RT @John_Paul: A8: Having a mindset without a heart-set can trip us up. #leadfromwithin Reminder!  Keep your heart engaged as you shift to Mission!  It is easier to keep feelings in Values, Beliefs and Vision.  Mission should still be missionary!  Keep some evangelical fever in it.  Yes I said that.  RT @TaraMarkus: Choice is a gift not to be under-valued! Choose your Mission Vision and Values with mind heart and soul  #leadfromwithin

11. How to Lead From Within?  Last step is Methods.

Managers pay attention to the methods.  Methods, or hows, are critical to success, they just are not important!  (sorry, “bear baiting” managers, must stop!)  Methods are always tied to What we are doing.  What we are doing is always tied to Why.  Why we are doing is always tied to Need.  What is the fundamental need/problem we are trying to solve.  Think about communicating over distance.  Same basic need now as 300 years ago, just we are not using smoke signals too often these days.   A great leader will keep the organization’s “hows” congruent with the What/Why/Needs and will not be afraid to radically shift What and How they are doing things to better meet the Needs.  Think Steve Jobs.

12. Find a Sangha or Community.

The Tuesday evening #leadfromwithin Twitter Chat has been described by many as joyous!  People linger well past the hour to chat, catch up, and make new acquaintances.  RT @Koomba303: I truly love the intentional personal connections created by LFW. Reading what you’re doing with each other is inspiring! #LeadFromWithin It is a starting point for you to find support.  We all need safe mirrors:   RT @shareekenesi: Exactly RT @butterfly_pro: RT @emeliasam: RT @thehealthmaven: A4-Growth stems from those long looks in the mirror ~  #leadfromwithin and RT Josepf: A4) Yes, core beliefs MUST be questioned & tested, we must find safe/loving mirrors to examine ourselves in #leadfromwithin

I will let one of the professional coaches weigh in on the value of coaching or mirrors to great leaders.  There are many quality examples.  What I will urge you to do is find your community.  It does not need to be this one, there are other great communities on and offline.  Just find one that fits you and participate, build relationships and trust.  Earn mirrorships (they are more important than mayorships, sorry #4SQ).

In closing, I did not cover 1/25th of the essence of the Tweets from tonight.  Nor did I cover 1/25th of the people!  So many great names and thoughts left out!  So jump in!  What did I miss with my snapped off synopsis?   Please add your heart-felt comments below!

I very much enjoyed this blog, Josepf, as I'm on the spiritual path and looking for ways to align my core beliefs and my professional life. One thing I have learned recently, going back to instinct, is fear/anxiety clouds who I am and what I want to accomplish. When I start going down the anxious path, I remind myself of my instinct and ask "can you trust yourself to listen to it?" It's hard but ultimately, if I can really listen, it serves me well. Thanks, again.

I needed to post that question I had while reading this blog in order to process some of my OWN thoughts while reading this. I was CURIOUS to hear your perspectives on the matter.

This blog is VERY WELL WRITTEN. I'm glad to have "stumbled" upon it (.or was I TRIPPED??? Hee Hee Hee)

I GET "leadingfromwithin". It's how I've lived my life for YEARS .... but until now, I've never heard anyone ARTICULATING the concept so eloquently.

I was not curious as to how do IIIIIIIIII know I've arrived at helpful beliefs & values - but rather how do WE ALL know that what what we've concluded is TRUE, or BEST, or RIGHT , or GOOD - our core beliefs/values --- how do we KNOW that the beliefs we operate out of are really the BEST ones or the RIGHT ones in the FIRST place.

That being asked, or said.......... if I were not so TIRED last night I would have stayed on and continued to say - THANK YOU Josepf for mentioning to me that you had blogged while you were in jail. It made me curious to come check it out - and I'm glad I did. Well written. Well stated. WELL WORTH the visit!! :)

@Josepf @LollyDaskal@heart_path

I'm needing to 'chat' while I'm reading this blog. First question that comes up is:

How do I know I have arrived at or possess GOOD beliefs & values.

I cannot help but think of Adolf Hitler who believed VERY PASSIONATELY & PERSUASIVELY in what he believed and valued and whose path became what it became BECAUSE of his beliefs & values.

How do we measure?

I measure my own core beliefs in light of standards that I belief are true & universal and exist OUTSIDE of myself - but I am curious as to how YOU ALL address this and articulate yourselves on this matter (you're all so GOOD with that!! :) )

@maryrose @Josepf @LollyDaskal

Here are my two cents, Mary:

Leading from within is not about defining and measuring what is 'good', but in living in alignment with our core values/beliefs and the authentic essence of who we essentially are. When I write about living/leading from my heart place (or from 'within', as Lolly would say), I am referring to finding and living in that centered place in which our outer lives reflect our inner values. As for the source of my core values and beliefs? Mine are rooted in my spirituality. For me, they exist both within and outside of myself, representing the truths of my God and also the core essence of who I am at a heart and soul level. When I try and define what 'Lead From Within' is about to others, I often refer to it as both authentic living/leadership and character-based living/leadership.

@heart_path @maryrose @LollyDaskal Ok, coffee in hand and 10 minute to write :) First, everything ShShSharon says. Then...

"Arrival" happens in fleeting moments. The inner peace, that feeling of the "stars have all aligned" from a deep internal place on out is the indicator.

As to the fundamental problem of EVIL (vs your GOOD). Here is my 1 minute... When we label someone or something as "Fundamentalist" we are, in part, acknowledging a closed mindset. Something not up for influence. The "path" involves finding safe "mirrors" to hone/refine ourselves with. Pretty sure Hitler shot & killed his safe mirrors.

As to measuring, Sharon's very right. There is not a standard to measure against. Part of your purpose, your mission, has to do with your Tribute Songs. You have the ability to put essence to music. Trade ya blogging for music writing & singing any day :) The concept of is it "Good" you write/sign vs being a Doctor? Those types of externals do not apply.

With that said, there are some universal truths. A universal evolution towards increased consciousness. This is a whole nother topic and I'm out of time and coffee :) (Thank you Mary Rose for jumping into the comments)

@Josepf @heart_path @maryrose @LollyDaskal Well put Josepf and of course there is # 5. Remember you will be wrong more than right. Mary I think it is so important that what you brought up. I have constantly struggled about this kind of thing, looking at life and holding to your core beliefs. With AH there was a man that forgot to check into his belief system to see if he was right or wrong, forgot that there were others far wiser than himself.

But if we do not push ourselves while leading from within, what are our core values worth.

If we look at the fictitious character Darth Vader and see, here was a boy that had deeply held core values, but he forgot as he grew to keep pushing himself, keep checking in with and against his core beliefs. He forgot #5. It was not until someone else who had even deeper and stronger core beliefs, a mission and values, that came from the very core of being saw deeper into what had been smothered; DV's core was enclose in his own self made jail.

How many men (and a few women) have been this way over the ages, to fall into the history books as being evil. Were they evil to the core or had they surrendered themselves to evil and to be eaten by its friends jealousy and hate, never to be rescued by humankind.

We must look at ourselves daily and acknowledge that we are all wrong somewhere somehow every day. We all have our part, to push and check, to acknowledge what we know is wrong (war, hunger) and do our part to make it a better place to live, to be better guardians of the planet and our fellows.

While there is war, and hunger in the world there is still a fundamental wrong in all our beliefs, it is not an easy one to find, but it is there, in each of us hidden away. We make choices everyday that are not furthering our guardianship of the planet or humankind. But that is why we must continue to lead from within and to push our boundaries, keep checking against our core to see our mistakes and make amends in the ways we can. Everyday doing better than the one before.

Never give up living, never give up hope, there is pure good at the seed of all humankind. It is a balance between evolution, growth and change, and that, we must do better with. We need the strength knowledge of our inner core beliefs and of others, that is part of leading from within. The true strength of anything is not in the parts, or even the sum of the parts. It is in the product of what the sum of the parts create and that is far greater that we can imagine. And that is why it is so easy to get lost, to go in search of what you can never find on your own. That strength can not be found by searching it can only be found by working, together as one.

Leadfromwithin of from the heart or what ever words you give it is about knowing those 12 important steps above and so much more. We all will, MUST, make mistakes to keep up with evolution and change, mistakes are what makes us who we are, they gives us strength, are reminders (wake up calls) to keep up on track and do better today than we did yesterday.

Keep singing, communicating, having faith in yourself your fellows and your core beliefs. We are here because of each other and to help each other.

What a beautiful and heartfelt post, my friend! I'm sorry to have missed our weekly chat this week, though you know that I echo all of the sentiments expressed in yoru post and in the comments which follow. Increasingly, I've become a bit of an evangelist on this subject, for tuning into our heart space and learning to lead from within not only empowers us to live lives of deep inner peace and purpose, but empowers others to grow within as well.

Dear Josepf,

So glad you made it out of Twitter Jail, I think you put the this beautifully and purposefully. It gets to the core of leading from within. The chats bring such passion and life to a theme that is far greater than the internet can ever do justice. Lolly is such a great conduit that enables others to grow within themselves. I feel like I have sprouted wings since I first bumped into her and #leadfromwithin.

I am so grateful that your have the prose to be able to do such a great job at bringing such clarity to what can be a crazy (but wonderful) hour of twitter chat.

Thanks so much Joseph,

Warmest, Simon

Hi Josepf ~ Thank you for posting this. I met Lolly a few months ago when I first came on the Twitter scene; it was a Friday morning and everyone was doing their usual #FF posts. Something stuck out in my stream...I noticed Lolly was individualizing her recommendations with "I follow and admire________because..." This to me, was so special, here amongst all this clutter was someone actually taking the time to recognize individuals. I learned later that she would take posts from the Tuesday chat and incorprate them in to her #FF recommendation, very nice. The Lead From Within community is really a special group of folks and I am so glad to be considered part of this family. All my best, John
