12 Most Comforting Soups

12 Most Comforting Soups

Comfort food warms the body and soul after a long day as well as being warm and wonderful when the temperature dips.

Think you can’t make soup? Think again – it is definitely one of the easiest things to pull off in the kitchen. You can make it ahead and keep it in the fridge until the next night or freeze leftovers. Simmering soup makes the house smell great and the anticipation of a fabulous home-cooked meal is a thing of beauty.

Keep a variety of things in the cupboard to accompany your new soup recipe arsenal – saltines, oyster crackers, you name it. Warm biscuits from the oven would be delicious with many of these recipes.  Be creative with toppings and experiment with different types of cheeses.

Click on the name of the soup for a link to the full recipe and be prepared to thrill your family at meal time.

1. Old-Fashioned Chicken Noodle Soup

Everyone needs chicken soup when they aren’t feeling well. I always at least double the amount of carrots because I love them. Keep this recipe handy and boost the level of love coming from your kitchen.

2. Cheddar Broccoli Soup

Filling and delicious! This is a kid favorite at my house.

3. Sausage Tortellini

Another favorite at my house. Top with parmesan cheese for an extra boost of flavor.

4. Italian Wedding Soup

This easy-to-make soup has meatballs in it and who doesn’t love meatballs?

5. Black Bean Soup

This simple recipe uses canned black beans, not dried, which is quicker. I would make corn muffins with this and top with sour cream.

6. Cream of Wild Mushroom Soup

A combination of shiitake, portobello and cremini mushrooms gives this creamy and delicious soup layers of flavor.

7. Creamy Tomato-Balsamic Soup

I like to make homemade croutons with my tomato soup. Cut a loaf of Italian bread into cubes, spread them on a cookie sheet and spray with cooking spray. Then sprinkle with salt, pepper and parsley. Bake in the oven at 375 until toasted.

8. Roasted Butternut Squash and Shallot Soup

Sweet roasted winter squash and shallots are spiced up with ginger in this easy soup recipe.

9. Split Pea Soup with Rosemary

Rosemary adds a lovely savory touch to this creamy soup. Warm biscuits would add the final touch beautifully.

10. Tortilla Soup

This easy to make soup is topped with sour cream, cheddar cheese and corn chips. Yum!

I am including a few stews recipes…..indulge me.

11. Guinness Beef Stew

I am not a beer fan but Guinness adds great texture and flavor to beef stew. If you think you might not like the taste of beer with it, I encourage you to try it anyway. It is fabulous!

12. Old-Time Beef Stew

This classic recipe also has a video that you can watch on this site. Classic, hearty beef stew – you won’t be sorry that you made this tempting dish.

Bonus recipe:

Classic Buttermilk Biscuits

What is your favorite homemade soup at your house? Please share – I am always looking for new recipes! Variety is the spice of life.

One of my favorite parts of winter is having soups :) They are so simple to make, delicious and a whole meal in themselves! There is no reason not to enjoy soups in the depth of winter. I love the French Onion soup :) Thanks for sharing Peggy! All this making me hungry now!

Love the Sausage Tortellini and Tortilla Soup. Haven't tried the Guinness Beef Stew, but I am interested since I like stout beer ;). @kfvickery makes a great vegetable soup (and I like it w/hamburger of course). Do you get to throw Clam Chowder in w/this one...or is that a whole new category!

@dbvickery@kfvickery You need Guinness Beef Stew in your life. Honestly! Wish we were neighbors so we could have the Vickerys over!

@PegFitzpatrick@kfvickery That would be awesome - I could go for a good stout right now. Of course, I'm getting ready to shred a pork shoulder that has been smoking for about 16 hours!

Great list, Peggy! Potato soup is also very comforting. I created a healthy potato celery soup that readers tell me is delicious and makes a great meal on a cool night. Yum! Another great thing about soup is that it freezes well, so you can make a big batch and store individual servings in your freezer. Then just warm it up and have a great meal that's quicker than fast food from a drive though.

@PegFitzpatrick I love soup year round. In Summer, gazpacho, and in the Winter I tend to make lentil or black bean soup, with vegetables. Italian Wedding Soup is my all time favorite soup, so will have to try making that 1 day!

Oh, soup! I love soup! Thanks for gathering all these recipes! My current favorite is leek soup in a mushroom broth with scallions, carrots and pasta. A little parmigiana cheese on top, a piece of bread--and I'm in heaven :)

For some reason, I was convinced that making soup was a difficult and tedious challenge. After reading this post, I am determined to try making some of these soups this fall & winter. #1 #2 #10 and #11 are at the top of my list - and I cannot wait for my place to smell delicious :) Thanks so much for sharing, Peg!
