12 Most Prodigious Brands Using Instagram

We all know Instagram is a lot of fun. This iOS photo-sharing app with easy filters and addictive social sharing already boasts over 15 million users and was recently named “app of the year” by Apple’s App Store. As businesses look to broaden their reach in the New Year with new social networks, many are asking, “Is there a place for my brand on Instagram?”

Instagram can offer brands a couple of key opportunities. First, it provides an easy tool for content creation. While it’s true that content is king, many still struggle with or are intimidated by the act of content creation. Instagram turns anyone with an iPhone or iPad into a photojournalist for their brand with filters and effects that bring into question the very existence of a “bad shot.” The journalism angle is key as the most compelling Instagram content also tells a story.

The other opportunity brands can gain from Instagram is a sense of closeness with their community. Like the email inbox and the Facebook wall before it, the Instagram stream represents special real-estate in your followers’ minds often reserved for relatives and close friends. Some companies just really hit the mark for marketing and advertising. Starbucks is that company for me. Great art, seasonal cup changes and Starbucks really "gets" all of social. None of that topped by their excellent product and stellar customer service.

I also heard great things about Chobani on Pinterest as well. The President also seems very well connected between Twitter and Instagram. Is he on Facebook? Wonder what the Founding Fathers would think about that?

Smart brands, whether they are companies or people, are really given a lot of tools, interesting to see how they are being used.

@Peg Fitzpatrick Thanks for reading and commenting Peg! Agreed on Starbucks. As a marketing writer you want to come up with fresh examples. EVERYONE cites @Starbucks but they make it hard when they do things as consistently good. Their work on Instagram is no different.

The Founding Fathers could have trouble with Twitter and Instagram. They had enough trouble coming together to form the country. I couldn't imagine them trying to get their heads around a social media policy. I haven't really thought of Instagram in conjunction with our brand - although I see definite possibilities with Pinterest. Of course, we'd have to get creative since we are a software solution provider. I definitely see more opps for B2C.
